Chairman of the Medical Sexology panel:
Pedro de Freitas MD, PhD, received his doctorate in Clinical Sexology from the American Academy of Clinical Sexologists (AACS), where he is an associated teacher. Currently, he is a member of the American Board of Sexology and is the president of the Portuguese Academy for Sexology. He conducts hormonal therapy in gender dysphoric patients, gives formation on counselling  techniques and is the coordinator for the Commission for Clinic Sexology.

João Décio Ferreira, MD, is a specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and was responsible for the sexual reassignment surgery (SRS) team in Santa Maria Hospital, Lisbon, Portugal.
For his work and progress in this field, he received the Magnus Hirschfeld medal, given by the German Society for Sexual Science.
Doctor João Décio is a member of the Lisbon Medical Sciences Society and the Portuguese Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Society, among others.
His talk will be a unique chance to learn about SRS from a true master of the art.

Ivanka Savic-Berglund MD, PhD, is professor of neurology at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. Currently, she works as an invited Professor of Neurology at UCLA.
Her work is based oncerebral anatomy and function and by using neuroimaging methods such as fMRI, DTI and PET; Dr. Savic-Berglund tries to find differences on the neurobiology and behaviour according to gender and sexual orientation.
In 2017, Doctor Ivanka was invited to the EPATH congress (European Professional Association for Transgender Health) as a Keynote speaker to explain her discoveries on the neurobiology of gender dysphoria.

Pamela Gawler-Wright is a psychotherapist qualified by the UKCP, works as External Moderator for the Institute for Transactional
Analysis and is a member of the UKCP Diversity, Equalities and Social Responsibility Committee.
She is known for her exposition of Ericksonian Psychotherapeutic principles and is pioneer in utilising therapeutic storytelling in the treatment of trauma, depression and anxiety, taking part in Advanced Clinical Applications training for practicing psychotherapists.

Chairman of the Surgery and Critical Care panel:
António Gentil Martins, MD got his degree in Medicine from Faculdade de Medicina da
Universidade de Lisboa, in 1953. He is a paediatric and plastic surgeon, with a sub-specialisation in paediatric oncology.
He has founded both the Portuguese and the European Associations of Pediatric Surgeons as well as the World Federation of Associations and the International Society of Pediatric Oncology.
Professor Gentil Martins was a pioneer in the multidisciplinary treatment of paediatric cancer, he counts more than 12,000 surgeries and has authored more than 20 original techniques.

Professor Iain Hutchison MD is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, specialising in oncological surgery and reconstruction of severe facial deficits.
In his practice, he sees faces that lack the basic ability to function and thus decided to revolutionise the treatment options through his research.
He founded and currently heads Saving Faces (The Facial Surgery Research Foundation).
In his talk, Professor Iain Hutchison will inspire us - as doctors of the future - to pursue clinical research, by asking us to look beyond first impressions and sharing photographs of facial conditions and surgical advances.

Konrad Reinhart MD, is recognised internationally as a campaigner for sepsis awareness. He is chairman of the Global Sepsis Alliance and was a member of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive & Critical Care Medicine and of the International Sepsis Forum. In Germany, he is Professor and Chair of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena.  His research activities originated more than 750 peer-reviewed publications that led to honours such as membership of the German National Academy of Science and the Research Award of the Federal State of Thuringia.

Ross Fischer MD, is a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at Sheffield Children's Hospital, UK. His specialist interests are Oncological Surgery and Trauma Management.
He is part of UK’s National Trauma re-organisation programme, part of the working party that developed The Royal College of Radiology Paediatric Trauma Imaging Guidelines and is Chairman of TARNlet, the national trauma database for Children.
He has a keen interest in Medical Education and his more famous alter ego @ffolliet has developed a novel approach to #presentationskills called p cubed presentations, thus having been an invited speaker at TEDx and SMACC (Social Media and Critical Care).

Ricardo Baptista Leite is a medical doctor and member of the Portuguese Parliament, where he sits on the Health Committee and on the Foreign Affairs Committee. 
Doctor Baptista Leite is Head of Public Health at the Institute of Health Sciences at Católica University of Portugal, Coordinator of the Sustainable Healthcare Unit at NOVA Information Management School and Guest Lecturer at NOVA Medical School.
Prior to being elected MP, he was a practicing physician for 7 years and he also worked as a consultant at a multinational company in the field of health information technologies.

Martha Clokie obtained a BSc in Biology from Dundee University in 1996, an MSc in Biodiversity from Edinburgh University in 1997, and a PhD from Leicester University in Molecular Ecology in 2001. In 2007 she was appointed as a lecturer at Leicester and in 2016 was promoted to Professor of Microbiology. Her research focuses on identifying, characterizing and developing bacteriophages (viruses) that target and kill bacterial pathogens of medical relevance.
In her talk Professor Clokie will introduce us to bacteriophages and amaze us with their potential, whilst sharing experiences and challenges from her own work.

After a broad experience in Finance and Strategy, Mr. Zémor worked as a business developer in an m-health start-up that leverages big data analytics to offer innovative solutions for people with migraine.
He is currently Strategy Leader of Sanofi’s Global Integrated Care team, exploring an approach to patient care that goes beyond the pill, offering more than medicines by combining drugs, services, devices and data management. Markus Krane graduated from the Ludwig Maximillians University School of Medicine (Munich) in 2004. He did his cardiac surgery fellowship training in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the German Heart Center Munich (GHCM) and, in 2011, he became head of the Department of Experimental Surgery. Besides his clinical research activity, his basic research focus is on cardiac regeneration - being interested in embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cell biology in the context of cardiac development and regeneration.
His lecture will reveal the potential of stem cell therapy for cardiac repair and the viability of lab-grown cardiomyocytes for transplantation.

Carlos Aguiar MD, got his degree in Medicine from the Nova Medical School, Nova University of Lisbon, in 1993.
Currently he is a consultant cardiologist at Hospital Santa Cruz, in Lisbon, Portugal, acting as a staff physician of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, chair of the Advanced Heart Failure Clinic and co-chair of the Adult Heart Transplantation Unit.
He is Vice-President of the Cardiology Section of the European Union of Medical Specialists since 2013, a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Cardiovascular Diagnosis and Therapy and the Portuguese Journal of Cardiology and has authored 70 original papers published in peer-reviewed journals.

Aneil Malhotra MA (Hons), MRCP (UK), MSc (Hons), MB BChir, qualified from the University of Cambridge in 2006 and later moved to Oxford to continue his specialist training in General Medicine and Cardiology.

Carlo Pappone MD, PhD, graduated from the School of Medicine of “Federico II” (Naples University) in 1986, with honours. He got his Cardiology Specialty Degree and, in 1995, he completed his PhD in Cardiovascular Pathophysiology, at the University "Tor Vergata", in Rome. Dr Pappone is currently Director of the Department of Arrhythmology at the Hospital San Raffaele in Milan, Italy. On the clinical side, he has performed successfully the first transatlantic arrhythmia ablation procedure, inaugurating a new era of democratic medicine for everyone.

In his talk, he will talk about his primary interests in cardioelectrophysiology.

Ferdinand R. Waldenberger MD, PhD, studied Medicine at Medical University of Innsbruck (Austria), earning his PhD from KU Leuven (Belgium) in 1995.
In 1988, he completed his internship/residency in Cardiac Surgery, and later was appointed as Professor of this specialty. Since 2010, he has been medical director at General Clinical Centre Klagenfurt, having performed 3000 cardiac operations so far.

Chairman of the Nobel Lecture:
José António Belo, PhD, received his BSc. in Biology in 1993 and completed his PhD in 1998 under the supervision of Eddy M. De Robertis at UCLA, USA. In November 2013 he joined NOVA Medical School (NMS/FCM), as an Associate Professor, coordinating the Cellular and Molecular Medicine area, and is currently a Principal Investigator at the Chronic Diseases Research Center (CEDOC) in Lisbon. There he heads the Stem Cell and Developmental Biology laboratory and a research team whose focus is mainly on cardiogenesis and Left-Right asymmetry.

Professor Sir Ian Wilmut, PhD, is a British developmental biologist best known for having been the first to use a donor nucleus of a differentiated adult cell to generate a mammalian clone – Dolly, the sheep, born in 1996.
He attended the Agricultural College, University of Nottingham, and graduated in 1967 after which he obtained his doctorate by Darwin College, Cambridge.
In 1973, Professor Wilmut was working at the ABRO (nowadays the Roslin Institute) where he pursued his interests in basic research and genetical engineering (“pharming”).
In the late 1980s, Sir Ian Wilmut and his colleagues endeavoured into cloning, firstly with embryonic stem cells and later using somatic cell nuclear transfer. In 2000 he became head of the department of gene expression and development at the Roslin Institute and his interest shifted to humans, having led research efforts into cellular reprogramming.

Sebastião Rodrigues, PhD, received his doctorate in Genetics from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (UNL) and, currently, is an Assistant Professor of Genetics at NOVA Medical School, UNL.
He is a reviewer for various journals, namely Gene, and for the last 20 years has been scientific advisor of several pre-graduate students.
His main areas of scientific interest include Cancer and Drug Resistance, Toxicology and Radiobiology, having authored or co-authored many papers and publications.

Eric Francis Wieschaus, MD, PhD, graduated in 1969 from the University of Notre Dame, Indianapolis, USA, then went on to complete his PhD at Yale University, Connecticut, and finally got his postdoctoral, in 1978, from the University of Zürich, Switzerland.
In 1995 the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded jointly to Edward B. Lewis, Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and Eric F. Wieschaus for their discoveries concerning "the genetic control of early embryonic development”.
Using Drosophila, Professor Wieschaus and his research partner were able to identify and classify a small number of genes that are of key importance in determining the body plan and the formation of body segments.
Currently, he is a Professor in Molecular Biology at Princeton University and leader of the Wieschaus Lab where he still conducts research on the embryonic development of Drosophila melanogaster.
