Maria Manuel Mota graduated in Biology and obtained a Masters degree in Immunology from the University of Porto. Later she undertook her postdoctoral research at the New York University Medical School.
In 2005, Maria became the leader of the Malaria Unit of the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) ─ of which she is currently the Executive Director ─ and an Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine of Lisbon University (FMUL).
She has published high-profile malaria research in international scientific journals and holds five international patents, besides having won multiple awards for her work.
